The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon hasn't budged much since I tasted it last year. Still deep, muscular and super-expressive, the 2016 is a very pretty Calistoga Cabernet. Black cherry, plum, grilled herbs, menthol, leather, incense and licorice all meld together in the glass. The 2016 still needs time in bottle, but there is so much to look forward to.

Ripe and solidly built, with steeped dark currant and plum fruit, inlaid with singed apple wood, licorice root and warm fruitcake notes. Ends with a gutsy feel. Best from 2020 through 2024. 485 cases made.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it explodes from the glass with loads of spicy sparks—cinnamon, cardamom, Sichuan pepper and cloves—with a core of blackcurrant cordial, warm blueberries and boysenberries plus wafts of cedar chest, tilled soil and stewed tea. Full-bodied, rich and spicy in the mouth, it has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with fantastic length.
