The 2013 Promontory was utterly spellbinding when I tasted it last year. Since then, it has totally shut down after its recent bottling. Beams of mountain tannin and salinity give the wine its vibrancy, energy and pure mineral-driven intensity. Graphite, leather, game, smoke and dark stone fruit overtones start to take shape, but the 2013 is in no mood to show all of its cards. The 2013 is the most brilliant wine made yet at Promontory, and it has plenty of upside.

I knew it was only a matter of time before Davide Cilli would make a wine at Promontory that would represent the maximum expression of this rugged hillside site. The 2014 Promontory has been exceptional in the past, but it has also gained another gear or two over the last year, which is pretty much now standard for these wines. Stunningly delineated and precise, with tremendous purity and exceptional balance, the 2014 Promontory dazzles from start to finish. This is an especially translucent style, one that is more about persistence and balance than power alone. Stated simply, the 2014 Promontory is towering achievement from one of Napa Valley's most talented young winemakers. Kudos to the Harlan family and the winegrowing team led by Bob Levy and Cory Empting for creating the framework that allowed Cilli to craft this exquisite, riveting Cabernet Sauvignon.

2015: 97+ Punkte
Usually an exotic wine, the 2015 Promontory comes across as much more laid back today. Time seems to be bringing out more freshness, aromatic lift and brightness in its fruit, which I don't really know how to explain given the intense heat of the year. It will be interesting to see where the 2015 goes from here. Today, it certainly appears to have a very bright future, although it does appear to be going through some sort of transitional phase.

This has a dense and intense palate with beautifully crafted tannins that frame a full body of fruit and wet earth, spice and dried mushrooms. Undertones of pine needles and cedar. Some truffles, too. Vivid and energetic. New Napa here. Better in 2022, but already very attractive. Drink or hold. (02/2019)

This is a red with such incredible depth and beauty with a tannin structure that just melts into the glass. It’s full body, yet extremely tense and perfectly succulent. Hints of bitter lemon, cedar and dark berry. Pine needle and spice with fresh mushroom. It’s reserved and wonderful. Tension and focus. First vintage aged in all cask. Impressive now but one for the cellar. New classic for Napa. Better after 2022. (11/2019)

Insane aromas of lavender, blackberries, wet earth and ripe yet fresh fruit. Full body with very deep fruit, pine needles and hints of chocolate and cedar. Very long and wonderfully polished. This has wonderful depth and focus. Release in 2021. Better after 2024. (02/2019)

Starting with the 2014 Promontory, this is a riveting wine in the vintage and will unquestionably be one of the longest-lived as well. Sporting a saturated purple color as well as a rock star nose of ripe blue fruits, crushed rocks, graphite, and leaf pencil, this monster of a wine hits the palate with full-bodied richness and depth, building tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a finish that won’t quit. Where most 2014s are already accessible and charming, this needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will be a 40- to 50-year wine. (01/2019)

I was lucky enough to be able to taste a small vertical for this report. Starting with the 2015 Promontory, this is still youthful and unevolved, but wow, it’s nevertheless a brilliant wine. Gorgeous notes of currants, mulberries, and black cherry fruits as well as lots of tapenade and leafy herb notes define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, sweet, polished tannins, and a great finish. It can be enjoyed today but won’t hit prime time for another 3-4 years. It should evolve for decades. (01/2021)

A flash of singed mesquite starts this red off, followed by a lush set of warmed plum, blackberry and fig preserve flavors all coated with a bittersweet chocolate note. A warm earth note underscores the muscular finish. Has more oomph than purity, but this has drive and focus. Best from 2023 through 2036. 1,700 cases made.

The best wine so far (although I suspect the 2015 may ultimately enter the picture as well) is the nearly perfect 2013 Promontory Estate. It is simply richer and fuller, with greater integration of tannin, and tastes spectacular. With an opaque, dense purple color and notes of graphite, wet rocks, blackberry and blueberry fruit, some charcoal, and again, loads of spice and loamy soil nuances, the wine has great intensity, a full-bodied texture, and finely grained, sweet tannin. This is a stunner and again, accessible, but its best days are probably a good decade away, as this could very well turn out to be a 40- to 50-year wine.

This 2014 is being released in November 2019. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Promontory bursts from the glass with bold, brazen notions of crushed blackcurrants, black raspberries, wild blueberries and redcurrant jelly with a compelling perfume of rose hip tea, sandalwood, unsmoked cigars and dried lavender. Full-bodied, super intense and yet wonderfully ethereal, it has a firm line of very fine-grained tannins, tons of freshness and incredibly vibrant, crunchy fruit, finishing long with bags of energy.

The 2015 Promontory has recently been released in the domestic market and is due for international release in spring 2021. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has sprung to life since I last tasted it, prancing out of the glass with showy red currant jelly, black cherry compote and warm cassis notes plus hints of cinnamon toast, wilted roses, unsmoked cigars and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, the palate is rich and impactful, featuring layer upon layer of red and black fruits with loads of mineral sparks. The structure is rock-solid with firm, rugged tannins that are beginning to come into line with the flamboyant fruit, finishing with great length and a lively lift.
