The 2013 Kata Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard comes across as a bit ponderous in this tasting. Perhaps the wine is going through a closed phase, but today the aromatics are quite reticent, while the new oak is prominent in the wine's espresso and torrefaction flavors. There is plenty of depth to the dark cherry, plum and mocha flavors, but some of the energy that has been present in the past proves elusive today.

This is a fascinating red with so much high-toned blackberry, blueberry and stone. Asphalt and tar. Lavender and violets. Full-bodied yet agile and lively. It's seamless and formed. Incredible depth and refinement, yet posture. Cabernet sauvignon and 20% petite sirah. Give it two or three years, but so great now. (2016)
Very perfumed and bright with blueberry, violet and dark fruit. Lavender. Full body, linear with more tannic traction. Edgy. Bright finish. Some hot stones. Drink now. (2017)
This shows a brightness and balance with blackberry and blueberry. Orange peel, too. Medium body and fine tannins. Crisp and fresh. Delicious now. (2017)
There’s a whopping 20 barrels of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard, which comes from a site just beside the Dr. Crane Vineyard in St. Helena. Incorporating 17% Petite Sirah, it’s a sensational Cabernet Sauvignon that blends power and finesse. Deep black (and some blue) fruits, toasty oak, chocolate and hints of lead pencil shavings all give way to a seriously concentrated, yet also incredibly elegant and balanced Cabernet Sauvignon that’s going to cruise in the cellar. (2017)
Made from 80% Cabernet and 20% Petite Sirah, there’s even less of the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard (16 barrels) than the 2013 and it too is inky purple in color (no doubt from the high percentage of Petite Sirah) and a concentrated, seamless beauty. Toasted bread, spices, cassis and hints of graphite all emerge from this lively, plump 2014 that’s much more open and ready to go than the more reserved, classically styled 2013. Nevertheless, I love its mid-palate, it has plenty of tannin, and I suspect will evolve gracefully given its overall balance and harmony. It too is a smokin’ effort to drink over the coming 15-20 years. (2017)
Winemaker David Beckstoffer commented that he was blown away by the 2015 vintage. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard offers the sexy exuberance of the vintage front and center with its huge nose of blueberry fruits, bay leaf, and violets. It's deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, with just straight-up awesome purity of fruit. This is gorgeous. (2019)
A new entry, this wine emerges from a Beckstoffer-owned vineyard right next to his more famous Dr. Crane Vineyard in St. Helena. A blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Petite Sirah, the wine has a dense purple color and a big, sweet kiss of pen ink and graphite as well as blueberry and blackberry fruit. Sweet tannins, an opulent, full-bodied mouthfeel, super-duper purity and a multi-layered finish of close to 45 seconds make for a terrific Cabernet Sauvignon from this great vintage. Drink it over the next 20+ years.
- Robert M. Parker, Jr. (2015)
This is a beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the Beckstoffer-owned vineyards. This blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petite Sirah offers delicious blackberry and cassis fruit, floral notes and a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel with terrific purity, texture and length. Like most 2014s, it is open for business and should continue to drink well for at least 10-15 years.
