The 2023 Haut-Bergey is bold and dynamic from the very first taste. Strong floral and savory accents lend a distinctive flair to this super-expressive Pessac-Léognan. The strong presence of Cabernet Franc comes through loud and clear. There's terrific purity to the fruit and fine balance to wrap it all together. Rose petal, sage, mint and crushed red berry fruit linger. It's one of the most intriguing wines of the year. Aging is in amphora, foudre, cement egg and tank. Haut-Bergey is one of the major sleepers of 2023. Tasted three times.

This is a juicy and savory red with ripe blue-fruit and violet aromas. It’s medium-bodied with supple tannins. Good concentration of fruit. Fine finish. (04/2024)

Coming from vines located between Malartic and Chevalier, the 2023 Château Haut-Bergey has beautiful red fruits, dried herbs, spicy, and loamy earth notes in its medium-bodied, nicely textured, balanced profile. It has some firmer tannins on the finish, but I suspect those will resolve nicely over the course of its élevage. Tasted twice with consistent notes. (05/2024)

The 2023 Haut-Bergey is deep garnet-purple in color. It offers up notes of baked blackberries and stewed black cherries, giving way to an undercurrent of dried herbs, graphite, and raspberry leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate is lightly chewy, with savory-laced black fruit layers and a soft-spoken finish. (05/2024)

Matured without using barrels, the 2023 Haut Bergey instead utilized stainless steel tanks, egg-shaped concrete containers, TAVA amphorae and foudres of 30 hectoliters. It reveals a perfumed, delicate bouquet of cassis, blueberries, mulberries, flowers and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and lively, it’s perfectly balanced with a juicy texture that finishes long and mouthwatering. The increased proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, necessitated by mildew on the Merlot, imparts a delicate and tense mid-palate characterized by powdery tannins. This blend, consisting of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot, is a singularly well-executed wine at this address.
