(Aconcagua Costa DO; 3.2 hectares; 100% Syrah; 13% alcohol). Meaty. Charcuterie. Horse’s hair. Smoked bacon crisps – Frazzles (do you remember those?). Chewy dark berry and plum fruits. Fresh, crisp, crunchy. Nicely open-texture despite the density. There’s something Hermitage about the mid-palate. The tannins have been supremely well managed. The altitude (presumably) is responsible for the striking freshness. Pure rather than complex. But long and tapering on the finish. (2024)

Vibrant and enticing, with leafy raspberry, touches of dusted chocolate, stone fruits, cherry pit, rich damson plum and cola. Well balanced, good quality. Tomas Munoz winemaker, Eduardo Chadwick owner. (02/2024)

Sour black cherries, violets and a touch of peppercorns and chaparral. Really fresh and crunchy with al-dente fruit and tannins on the medium-bodied palate. Freshness is the key here, and there seems to be more fruit in this vintage. Drinkable now, but better from 2025.

The 2022 Las Pizarras Syrah leads an intensely exotic, herbal nose that forms around a core of cured meats, with aromas of mortadella, oregano, dried sage and bramble fruits. With increased aeration, it becomes fabulously floral and lifted. The palate is plush and velvety, braced with excellent tension and focus, leading to a saturated finish flanked by taut yet weightless tannins. Still wound up and inward, this will reward a year or to come together. It is a gorgeous expression nonetheless, and I look forward to following its progress in the cellar. It fermented with a small amount of whole clusters and aged 12 months in a mixture of French barrique and foudre.
