Julian Huber from Baden sets the bar high for German Chardonnay. This is especially true for this stunning wine from the Schlossberg, which features limestone soil. Here, all the elements come together to form a rich narrative: flinty notes, wet stone, and cold smoke combine with candied apple and peach. The acidity is firm yet ripe, providing a smooth flow. Everything is tightly woven and complex, with a very modern touch. A remarkable performance.

The 2022 Chardonnay Hecklingen Schlossberg GG shows clear, focused but also quite reductive fruit with flinty notes and ripe citrus aromas on the dense, yeasty and crocant nose. Very elegant on the palate, with a fine texture and persistent saline substance as well as stimulating nerve, the 2022 vintage shows minty notes on the finish. It is concentrated and enormously exciting and stylistically plays in its own German league, also because Julian Huber has perfected the use of wood. However, the wine needs a lot of time to develop radiance. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
