The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon shows a bit more depth, power and tannin than the Cabernet Sauvignon. It, too, is still coming together in barrel and needs to flesh out a bit more. Even so, I expect this will be a relatively light vintage of Rubicon.

The 2022 Rubicon is noticeably darker and more inward, yet it too has a beautiful sense of purity and finesse. Darker currants, spicy wood, graphite, lead pencil, and tobacco notes all define the aromatics, and it's elegant and medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, and tons to love. (12/2023)

The 2022 Rubicon, tasted as a barrel sample and composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.1% Cabernet Franc, 6.1% Merlot, and 2.8% Petit Verdot, is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of black cherry compote, warm cassis, and boysenberry preserves leap from the glass, leading to touches of violets, cedar chest, and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals a fine-grained texture of nice ripe tannins and bags of freshness to frame the tightly wound black fruit layers, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. 95-97 POINTS
Out of barrel, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon boasts exciting scents of ripe cherries, dusty earth and baking spices—cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom—plus more obviously oak-derived notes of cedar. It's medium to full-bodied, reflecting a freshness that belies the vintage's heat, framed by silky tannins and possesses ample concentration and length on the finish without any feeling of excess weight.
