"When I started making this wine in 2018 I used to call it Freund (cause it was a vineyard a friend of mine owned). In 2022 I stopped calling it Freund. 2023 is the last vintage of this wine."  - Rajat Parr

Grapes for the 2022 Freund Gruner Veltliner come from the Spear Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. Some of the grapes were foot trodden, and 24 hours of skin contact resulted in a golden color. The wine fermented and matured for six months in a 2,000-liter foudre, and it was bottled by hand without fining, filtration or added sulfur. The nose opens with a pleasing touch of smoky reduction that gives way to poached pears and apples, honey and spicy undertones. The medium-bodied palate features concentrated, exotic fruit balanced by mouthwatering acidity, and a pleasing touch of textural grip lengthens the flavorful finish. This is a pleasure to drink! 2,040 bottles produced.

Brij is a new brand from Raj Parr. Although he has leased the Stolo Family Vineyards in Cambria for his Phelan Farm label, Brij is focused on wines made from purchased fruit. This lineup includes varietal wines like Assyrtiko, Albariño, Gruner Veltliner, Syrah and Grenache, with the goal of using little to no added sulfur. The wines are bright and easy to drink and offer excellent value for their modest price points.
