The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard races across the palate with copious blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, licorice, espresso and menthol. The True Cabernet is the most opulent, full-throttle wine in this range, yet it retains plenty of vibrancy.

So plush and creamy yet so muscular and sinewy at the same time. Opulent aromas of baked blueberries, dark chocolate and blackcurrants lead to a palate laced with powder-fine tannins, stony iron-like flavors and a deep well of black fruit in the center. Quite polished, almost silky in the finish, but showing the strength of the seamless tannins. Drinkable now and best from 2030.

Another perfect wine from this team is the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a site on Howell Mountain. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as incredible purity in its cassis, violets, graphite, and minty herb-like aromatics, this massive, full-bodied wine hits that palate with a dense, opulent mouthfeel, tons of velvety tannins, and flawless overall balance. I wrote in my notes that this would age forever, and I certainly suspect this wine will outlive me. Given its sheer wealth of fruit as well as its balance and purity, it offers ample pleasure today, but I'd nevertheless hide bottles for 4-6 years if possible. It should have 50 years of longevity. Opaque purple-black in color, the 2021 True Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon needs a little swirling to unlock notes of blackcurrant jelly, Indian spices, camphor, and underbrush followed by nuances of licorice and fragrant soil. The full-bodied palate is taut and muscular, with a firm structure of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and wonderfully pure/minerally. (08/2024)

Racy, vibrant and well-defined, this delivers gorgeous notes of mulberry, cassis, bitter plum and black currant preserves that drive along, carried by a terrific graphite underpinning. Anise, alder and tar accents fill in the available space to add range and energy, but it's the fruit that is pretty show-stopping. Shows the Howell Mountain grip, too. A banger.

Another exceptional wine from this vineyard on Howell Mountain, Outpost's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard features floral notes, crushed stone, cassis, blueberries and a hint of mocha as well. It's also full-bodied, rich and concentrated yet amazingly plush, silky and long on the finish. In a few words, it's complex yet harmonious, powerful yet elegant, and those seemingly oxymoronic juxtapositions often define great wine to this taster.
