This is so aromatic, with aromas of black fruit, mushrooms, pencil shavings, bark, blackberries and orange peel. So enticing. Medium- to full-bodied with a linear and lightly dusty tannin structure that coats the mouth beautifully and leaves your palate clean and energized. Fine-textured tannins. Well done for a complicated vintage. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Very drinkable now, but structured for aging. Drink or hold. (07/2024)

The 2020 Pym-Rae is based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 40% in new barrels, 10% in once-used barrels, and the rest in concrete tanks. It has a subtly smoky character in its ripe red and black fruits as well as attractive spice, tar, mint, and scorched earth-like nuances. Blind, I might guess Graves by the aromatics, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a focused, nicely balanced mouthfeel, savory tannins, and outstanding length. I think it clearly shows some smoke influence in its aromatics, yet it remains satisfying, balanced, and thoroughly enjoyable. This is one of those borderline 2020s from Napa that I find so difficult to review. On one side, it's clearly delicious and well-made, and depending on your ability to pick up on these tell-tale signs of smoke influence, offers ample pleasure, yet it's still a far cry from previous vintages, and while I do believe this will age, there's always some nagging doubt with these smoke-affected vintages. Nevertheless, this is a rock-solid 2020 that deserved to be made. (01/2025)

The 2020 Pym-Rae is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 25% Cabernet Franc. Opaque purple-black color, it’s a little closed and broody to start, offering earthy/savory notes of tar, black olives, black truffles, and Sichuan peer, giving way to a core of red currant jelly and blackberry pie, plus touches of underbrush and dried lavender. The full-bodied palate delivers a rock-solid structure of grainy tannins and bold freshness to support the taut, muscular black fruits, finishing long and earthy.
