The 2020 Caberlot is a delicate, understated wine in relative terms. Structurally, the 2020 feels a bit soft, most likely because of rain during harvest. Inviting aromatics and mid-weight structure are the calling cards. Bright, red-toned fruit, rose petals, mint, dried herbs, incense and blood orange are nicely delineated. In 2020, Caberlot is quite understated. I find it one of the quietest, hushed Caberlots I can remember tasting. This will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Very characterful and spicy nose full of peppery fruit. Lots of black pepper here with some pencil lead and a meaty undertone to the blue fruit. Polished and gamey on the medium-bodied palate with fresh, high acidity and lots of crushed blueberries and peppercorn spices in the linear, lengthy finish. Caberlot, a crossing between cabernet franc and merlot. Can be an acquired taste if you don’t like peppery spices. Drink or hold.

Full, rich and elegant, featuring black currant, black cherry, violet, iron, cedar and tobacco aromas and flavors. Boasts purity, finesse, terrific balance and a long, palate-staining aftertaste. This red is drinkable now yet should be even better in a year or two. Caberlot. Best from 2026 through 2045. 620 cases made, 120 cases imported.

The retail price you see here is for the magnum, or the format this wine is normally sold in. However, this review is based on the 750-milliliter bottle that is called "Sommelleria" because it is used in restaurants. Il Carnasciale's 2020 Il Caberlot is a 100% expression of the Caberlot grape that is featured at this estate only. It is reported to be a single grape variety that represents a cross of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This edition shows green peppery aromas, and the mouthfeel is a leaner, maybe because of rain during harvest. It shows powdery tannins with end notes of spice, sage and dark fruit. Some 3,900 magnums were released.
