2020 Chianti Classico Annata

The 2020 Chianti Classico is a very pretty, appealing wine. Bright acids lift a core of Sangiovese fruit. Floral top notes and silky tannins lend energy to this mid-weight, wonderfully alluring Chianti Classico from Monsanto.

The 2020 Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico has a lovely persistent fragrance of pure black cherries with slight iron or mineral elements. It has a beautifully harmonious palate, elegantly integrated with very fine, sandy tannins. It has a lively, fresh acidity, but the main thing here is its finesse and balance. It is super-harmonious and really pretty - one of the best Chianti Classicos annata 2020 wines that I have tasted.

A supple, approachable red marked by cherry, plum, earth and tobacco flavors. Gains support from vibrant acidity and moderately dense tannins. Long finish. Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Drink now through 2028. 6,000 cases made, 300 cases imported.

This is the entry-level red, or the so-called annata wine. The Castello di Monsanto 2020 Chianti Classico is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino aged in large oak casks for 15 months. Production is big with 55,000 bottles made. The wine is exceedingly simple and fresh, and it nails these objectives even in a hot vintage such as 2020. It shows medium-dark concentration and plenty of dark fruit and cherry.
