The 2019 Mauvesin-Barton has a rather backward nose without quite the same level of energy as its peers, therefore demands more coaxing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with loose-tannins, fleshy and approachable yet missing some grip on the finish. Not bad, but certainly not best in class. Two bottles tasted, the second demonstrating a tad more fruit, yet still not as convincing as its peers. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 Château Mauvesin Barton has more dark fruits, structure, and length, and it's a little more serious as well. Still, the tannins are nicely polished, and the balance is spot on. It's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade. (04/2022)

The 2019 Mauvesin Barton is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It offers up scents of kirsch, raspberry leaves, and mulberries, with touches of tobacco and graphite. The medium-bodied palate has appealing energy with soft, well-managed tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a red berry lift. (05/2023)
