The 2018 Barolo Cicala is a very good wine for the year. It offers good depth and intensity, in a slightly dialed back style that is typical of the vintage. More than anything else, the Cicala is impeccable in its balance. All the Cicala signatures are present, they are just quieter than usual. Black cherry, scorched earth, graphite, spice and oak all meld together. Best of all, the 2018 can be enjoyed with only minimal cellaring.

Aromas of very ripe berries, together with touches of earthy spice and licorice and a hint of balsamic. Full-to medium-bodied and focused with firm, grainy but not chewy tannins that push the fruit and oak-spice through the long finish. Very nicely structured for the vintage. Give it a few years for the wine to blossom. Best from 2025. (10/2022)

For the 2018 Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala the roots of the vines dig deep into the iron-rich soil of Cicala producing a hint of earthiness and violets and clear, bright lifted tones of strawberry or raspberry spice and even a spiced tomato juice note to the aromas. It is deeply layered and concentrated, with lots of fine silty tannins and a long, savoriness. This wine has a very long finish. Wait 3 years, drink for 20-25 at least.

Mulled plum, leather, sweet tobacco, camphor, tar and oak spice aromas and flavors show fine depth and intensity in this red, which boasts a broad, dense structure, with tannins that dominate the finish for now.
