The 2017 Pian del Ciampolo is rich, dense and almost shockingly concentrated. A rush of super-ripe red cherry Sangiovese fruit, cedar, tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried flowers builds in an unusually supple, racy Pian del Ciampolo that will drink beautifully right out of the gate. Stylistically, the 2017 reminds me of the 2015 in its generous, rich personality, but there is a good bit of freshness as well. More than anything, Pian del Ciampolo is a real overachiever in 2017.
