The 2017 Métisse Montbleau Vineyard feels quite a bit riper, bigger, and less expressive than the Jumping Goat, but then again, we are in St. Helena. Black cherry, gravel, licorice, blackberry jam, graphite, and cured meats are prominent here. The 2017 comes across as very closed today, with a huge core of super-ripe fruit dominated by big, powerful tannins. It will be interesting to see if the 2017 finds a bit more balance with time in bottle.

From a tiny two-acre site planted in the 1990s, the 2017 Metisse Montbleau is all Cabernet Sauvignon and spent 20 months new French oak. One of the standouts here, it has a gorgeous bouquet of blackcurrants, bloody meat, iron, exotic spices, and loamy earth. This carries to a full-bodied, powerful wine that has building tannins, a great mid-palate, and a huge finish. It reminds me of a great vintage of Léoville Las Cases and will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for three decades. (2020)

Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Metisse Montbleau gives up pronounced dark fruit notions of warm black currants, boysenberries and baked black plums with suggestions of bay leaves, tilled soil and cigar box. Medium-bodied, the palate is filled with juicy black fruit, featuring firm, grainy tannins and well-played freshness, finishing on an earthy note. 100 cases produced.
