The 2017 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a bit understated relative to some recent vintages, but it is nevertheless very pretty. Floral overtones and cool red berry fruit give the 2017 its distinctive, lifted personality. It is a bit light in structure but it is otherwise very nicely done; I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years, while the flavors remain fresh.

Terra cotta, red-berry pastry and a wild-herb thread, too. The palate has firm, wrapped tannin, cradling ripe cassis and blueberry flavors. Round, juicy tannins. Some vanilla now. A blend of 57% merlot, 38% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. Second wine of Château Calon-Ségur. Drink or hold. (01/2020)

This estate has been firing on all cylinders, and they’ve produced two outstanding wines in 2017. The 2017 Marquis de Calon is the second wine and is 57% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 30% new barrels and hit 13.2% natural alcohol. This medium-bodied, elegant Saint-Estephe has plenty of Merlot flesh and charm as well as terrific cassis fruit and notes of cedary herbs and flowers. It’s already impossible to resist, yet I suspect it will evolve for 10-15 years in cool cellars. (02/2020)

The Marquis de Calon Segur 2017 is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It saunters in with easygoing scents of crushed black and red cherries, redcurrant preserves, and menthol, plus hints of pencil shavings and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft and juicy with plenty of freshness and a perfumed finish. (12/2022)

Lively, with damson plum and red currant fruit, gilded with floral notes and backed by a bright iron streak on the finish. Very pure and fresh. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2030. 11,667 cases made.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose of the 2017 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur is meaty and earthy with baked plums, mulberries, cassis and woodsmoke aromas. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant, fresh and soft with a juicy finish. The wine was aged in French oak, 30% new, for 17 months. The blend is 57% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.
