2017 Château La Grave a Pomerol

The 2017 La Grave is powerful and dense in the glass. Dark blue and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs give the 2017 a decidedly somber intensity that comes through in the wine's overall feel as well. The tannins remain firm and sinewy, while slightly gamy, animal undertones reinforce an impression of rusticity. The 2017 is best enjoyed at the dinner table alongside rich, hearty fare.

Ripe and showy in feel, with lots of warmed fig, blackberry and plum compote aromas and flavors, supported by velvety tannins and backed by a long, ganache- and incense-filled finish. Very seductive. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2037. 1,760 cases made.

Composed of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine is medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 la Grave is a little closed to begin, unfurling to reveal notes of crushed rocks, iron ore and wild mushrooms over a core of blackberry pie, wild blueberries and mulberries. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mineral-tinged black fruits and a firm, chewy frame, finishing earthy.
