The 2016 Syrah Originals, from the oldest Syrah vines in Ballard Canyon, is full of earthy, gamy notes that give this burly, powerful wine much of its distinctive personality. Smoke, leather, licorice, tobacco and dark spice lie beneath a core of dark fruit. The 70% whole clusters are not especially evident. It would be nice to see a little more polish in the tannins, but this is nevertheless well done.
